The Friday Look |
There was some big news this week about ventilators, with the Department of Health and Human Services announcing that the federal stockpile is full and canceling some of its remaining orders. At the same time, Ventec Life Systems and General Motors completed their order for the stockpile, delivering 30,000 vents. Ventec will now take over GM’s Indiana plant that was converted to ventilator manufacturing.
While critical care needs might be less, well, critical, personal protective equipment (PPE) is still hard to get. The American Nursing Association surveyed 20,000 nurses in July and August and reported that one in three are either out of or short on N-95 masks; 68% said they are re-using single use PPE. To help health care companies optimize their use of PPE in response to coronavirus, the Centers for Disease Control has released an app-based version of its PPE Burn Rate Calculator; find it here.
Finally, the investigators at ProPublica have published a disturbing story about a New Orleans hospital making questionable decisions about hospice care for COVID-19 patients, especially in the light of the quarantine. See what you think. |
