CMS has released a report on the first performance year of the Next Generation Accountable Care Organization (ACO) Model. For the 2016 performance year, the model generated net savings to Medicare of approximately $62 million. However, the program is not without its challenges for health care systems. Electronic health records and a lack of interoperability between providers in the program hamper care, providers cited on a survey. Read Seema Verma’s comments on the program, at HomeCare. |

Going Bust Because of EHRs? |
A rural hospital system in Mississippi is citing the costs of implementing electronic health records as the main reason for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and reorganization. EHR adoption and health IT generally lags in rural areas, and Curae Health struggled to pay their vendors in three hospitals, EHR Intelligence reports. In other news, HIMSS is asking for CMS to relax Stark Law surrounding EHR data sharing between providers in alternative payment models to enable better care coordination. |
